Leading Languages in a Primary School
Over the course of the 24-25 academic year, I’ve had the great pleasure of working with a group of primary Languages subject leads from schools across Birmingham.
In our sessions we’ve explored what it means to be a Languages subject lead in a primary school. Our final session took place on Thursday 19th June and we were hosted by the wonderful team at Slade Primary School in Erdington inlcuding an opportunity to pop into French lessons in year 3, year 4 and year 5. 🙂
If you are new to Languages subject leadership, or if you are looking to re-invigorate your languages provision in school, you can download the key take-aways from the sessions and our discussions here.
Session 1: Setting the scene for language learning. Developing Linguists
This session explored:
- Intrinsic motivation for language learning
- Valuing all languages within your school community
- The role of phonics, vocabulary and grammar as the foundational pillars of language teaching
- Building a spiral curriculum in languages
Session 2: Leading language learning with confidence and credibility.
This session explored:
- Intent: What do you want learners to be able to know and show by the end of their KS2 language learning journey? How does this support their future language learning journey?
- Implementation: How can you ensure that your curriculum provision is supporting your learners to move closer to these goals? How can you support non-specialist teachers to develop their subject knowledge?
- Impact: How do you know if your curriculum is having your desired impact?
Session 3: What’s next? Raising the profile of languages in your school.
This session explored:
- Case studies from primary schools across the country sharing practical strategies of short, medium and longer term projects to raise the profile of languages in your school.
- Transition to secondary. KS2 language learning sets the scene for future study. How can you support your learners to continue their language learning journey as their transition to what is likely to be a number of different secondary schools.
